Deion Walker pushed Notre Dame's number one ranked recruiting class further on top by committing to the Irish on Saturday. Walker brings a combination of size and speed that Notre Dame has been missing to open up the field. He chose the Irish over offers from USC, Florida, LSU, Florida State and Penn State. Nice cohort list.
A couple of highlights from Saturday's all-star games:
Story #1: ND recruit Braxston Cave kept Florida commitment Omar Hunter in check all day long. Cave is not only one of Notre Dame's great ambassadors, but he's a very stout inside player. Cave won almost all of his battles against Hunter including a 1st quarter pancake of the Florida bound nose tackle (yes he committed to UF before December.)
Story #2: Crist to Floyd. The two hooked up for one long touchdown pass, but both players looked to be the best at their positions on the day and there was a lot of great competition on the field. Bob Lichtenfels ranked the quarterbacks: Crist, Pryor and Jackson. Crist will be a great one, but still needs a little polish. Floyd, as I've been harping, is an out of the box ready to play wide receiver. Goodman is faster than expected and a couple of milkshakes away from being a good player for Notre Dame. He has better raw skills now than any upperclassman wide receiver at Notre Dame. Walker has AA potential.
Story #3: Golic can play. The much undersized center looked much better than he did in one on one drills. He's still two years away from being physically ready to play, but he's got the skills and the frame to be a very good player down the road. Robinson is already a beast on the OL. Clelland and Golic are projects, but good projects to have.
Story #4: ND All-Stars. It was incredible to see an all-star game overflowing with Notre Dame talent and even better to see the character of the kids who committed to Notre Dame. It didn't hurt to see Florida's top two defensive back recruits choose other schools. Meyer's reputation (see Derrick Harvey) will catch up with him sooner or later -- maybe sooner if he makes rumored changes on his defensive coaching staff. What goes around...
Story #5: LB Speed. Both Filer and Fleming showed very good speed on the field today -- something Notre Dame sorely needs.

At the end of one of the games today, some guy from Rivals made the comment that Georgia would have the #1 recruiting class this year. Huh?
Agree with most of your comments but Pryor had quite a game.. Whoever lands him will have a dual threat, no doubt. Crist to Floyd was fun to watch. I thought Golic looked outstanding. Seeing Deion Walker commit to ND at the UnderArmor game was a bit of a surprise, as I thought he might be leaning to PSU. Overall, a great day for the Irish! Let's hope signing day confirms this years recruits!
Scott, thank you for the perfect Rock Report. You said it so well about what happened today, and how it applies to the future. I have one favor to ask of Board Ops. Can you put the quote by Dayne Crist back on NDNation? We believe it says so much about who the young men who are going to light it up at Notre Dame for the next four years...and beyond.
I think somebody else who deserves some credit is Anthony McDonald. He made some nice tackles on Pryor today, and always seemed to be in position on run plays. He looks like he could fill in a little bit, but other than that I think he could be a solid player.
I love Notre Dame like no other and appreciate this well written article - especially so quickly. However, there is no way Crist outperformed Pryor. Pryor looked very good, almost like VY did in the Rose Bowl. He was tough to tackle all day. Irish have a shot to make a BCS bowl next year and then play for all the marbles in Jan 2010!
Walker's commitment was much needed after a week of Omar Hunter discussions.
GO IRISH!
What do you mean it was nice to see an all star game with ND players? It's an annual event, it's a shame Lemming and NBC have anything to do with this game.
I agree with Anon about Lemming and NBC. Lemming makes me want to barf.
Mike Frank and the gang at Irish Eyes and Scout have so much more to offer over Lemming. He is a dork.
I second the notion on the Crist quote about the incoming class. That gives fans / alum a lot to believe in. Would you kindly re post that quote? I am having a hard time finding it
It all depends what yopu what you want out of your QB. Pryor looks to be great at running the football, but his accuracy is not that good from what I saw.
Crist has as good of arm, and a lot better accuracy. From what I saw of his hi-lites, he can also run when he has to. Definately a better pro prospect.
As a former Penn Grad. I love seeing a fellow Kingsmen do well. Especially when its against Hunter. The future at WR is looking great for the Irish. Crist looked good. Glad to hear and see Newman had a good week down in Texas.
I Think It's Funny How The Great ESPN Can Be Such Fairweather Fans When It Comes To Notre Dame. If You Look At The Newly Released ESPN 150 They Have Dropped Deion Walker From #34 To #104. Now What Happened In One Week That He All Of A Sudden Is 70 Spots Worse ? He Committed To ND...That's What Happened. If Walker Would Have Chose USC For Example Tom Luginbill And Todd McShay Would Have Raved About How Much Success He Will Have And How Great Deion Walker Is. Yes I Know ND Had A Bad Year, But You Don't Penalize A Kid's Stock Because He Is Going To ND. I Love How Rivals And Tom Lemming Have ND As A Clear #1 And ESPN Has Them At #3 Behind Miami And Georgia. Miami Has The Best Defensive Class, But How Will They Score. According To Rivals They Have 8 Two Star Prospects, ND Has No Two Stars. Georgia Is A Little Better As Seen On The Rivals Average, But They Don't Have The Overall Quality Or Fill The Needs Like ND's Class Which Is What A Top Recruiting Class Is All About. It Will Be Interesting To See Who ESPN Gives The Recruiting National Title To If ND Can Still Land Kenneth Page, Cyrus Gray And/Or Datone Jones, Mike Martin, Kapron Lewis-Moore To An Already Impressive Class. ESPN Hates ND When They Are Losing, But Loves The Ratings When They Are On Top. Recruiting Isn't Everything Just Ask Texas Until They Got Vince Young, But This Class On Top Of The Last 2 Years Will Close The Talent Gap. And For Everyone Who Thinks 6-6 Or Anything Above Is The Mark To Shoot For Next Year Is Crazy. With These 3 Classes ND Has More Talent Than Everyone They Play Next Year Outside Of USC And Michigan. There Will Be No Excuses Next Year, Weis Has To Develop These Guys And Be A Head Coach...Not Just An Offensive Coordinator.
