Notre Dame's Recruiting Class Tops in the Country

College football's second season breathed new life into the deflated Irish faithful, many despondent after a 3 win season. But the Notre Dame coaches did an outstanding job of identifying, targeting and closing on the top recruiting talent in the country and Notre Dame has signed its best class since the early 90s.

Is it the top class in the country? Well, certainly in the top 3 by any measure and it has the highest average rating per recruit of any team in the country, which means we're taking very few "projects." The final ranking isn't as important, but Milton Knox and Kapron Lewis Moore could put the Irish back on top in the end. The only way schools like Alabama and Miami could sneak ahead in the point count is by signing a larger number of players, which in my mind doesn't make for the best class. They're going to lose kids from those classes.

The "best" player in this class is hard to judge, because ND skimmed so effectively from around the country, but it's a class with few holes and star talent. There are a few players that stick out as slam dunk future stars.

Slam Dunks

WR Michael Floyd doesn't just have star potential, but already star ability. He could have easily been the MVP of the Army AA game. When we lost Aurelious Benn last year to the Zook sibling parole program, one astute follower commented that the silver lining was that we would have a great shot at Floyd who just doesn't have a weakness. He's got great size, deceptive speed, will go up and take the ball away from you and then run away from you. I was amazed at how good his feet were. He could already be Notre Dame's best receiver.

QB Dayne Crist is the best quarterback prospect Notre Dame has recruited according to many watchers (and that includes Quinn and Clausen.) He's 6'5" with a gun and shown the ability to make every throw necessary. When Clausen is done, Crist will step in and star.

OG Trevor Robinson
is a massive guard who rivals ranks as the best in the country. Notre Dame has to control the line of scrimmage and TR gives the Irish a road grader who will press the current OL for playing time immediately. And he's already on campus.

TE Kyle Rudolph
is a freak of nature. Rivals top TE, he's 6'6" with surprising athletic ability. the only reason there isn't more hype about his is because he signed early with the Irish.

DE Ethan Johnson's
first step looks surprisingly like Kerry Neal's. He's just able to get up to speed so fast and close on quarterbacks before they can react. EJ may be our best DE recruit since BY.

After those five, the Irish have a bevy of four star players who have the talent to reach AA status quickly. I'll call these the layups.

Layups

OLB Darius Fleming
ILM Steven Filer
DB Robert Blanton
WR Deion Walker
OC Braxton Cave
RB Jonas Gray

By Position:

Position-wise the coaches did a very good job across the board landing targets that fit Notre Dame's needs.

QB - A+: Crist is considered either the best or in the best three at his position.

RB - B+: Jonas Gray was a backup plan for ND after the Irish lost out on their top targets. Still, a 210, sub 4.4 40 running back is a hell of a backup plan.

WR - A+: Floyd, Walker and Goodman are Notre Dame's best across the board WR since I've been following Notre Dame.

TE - A+: Notre Dame didn't just land Rudolph, the number one or two rated Tight End in the country, but Joseph Fauria who's going to surprise a lot of people.

OL - B: Trevor Robinson is the lone headliner here and he's a very important pickup for the Irish. Golic and Cave both surprised many with their performances in the All-Star Games. Cave pretty much had his way with Omar Hunter. Clelland has all the tools and is nasty and athletic, but is going to need a few years to grow. Good, solid building blocks here.

NG - B+: Really nice job here getting Newman early. Hafis Williams also has the ability to play NG and is going to shock some ND watchers when he gets on campus. He's a big kid who can move and make plays.

DE - A-: Ethan Johnson is a stud. Sean Cynwar has the size and ability to play early, though isn't as speedy as you would hope. Kapron Lewis-Moore is a big framed kid with some ability who could grow into a very good DE.

OLB - B+: Darius Fleming looks like a future NFL player. He has great closing speed and ND beat out USC for his services.

ILB - B+: Steven Filer is loaded with talent, but hasn't shown great instincts to this point. Anthony McDonald seems to be limited athletically, but is no slouch. Poz looks like a bit of a project at this point.

DB - B+: Blanton showed he could cover anyone not named Michael Floyd. Slaughter is a big time hitter. McCarthy is everything you want in a Safety (with offers from OSU and LSU) the only question about him is recovery time.

Overall this is a class without a glaring weakness combined with a lot of star potential. Just a great job all-around by the staff to keep everyone after such a dismal season. As I've been saying since our last class, once you get three top classes in a row, you're a top program again.

Now the coaches just have to translate recruiting success to the field.

Great stuff- one quibble: Jonas is a stud and I believe he should have been a slam dunk also. Tremdous speed, great size for a back and outstanding numbers- 30+ TD's and 2500+ yards as a senior.

A great class, but where are the kickers? The is a void we need to fill before we can seriously begin to think about competing a top level again! Please, please do something to address this! Go IRISH!

More than just a quibble. Is Lane Clelland still part of this class? If so, any thoughts on him?

I think Crist will not have to wait until Clausen is done. There's going to be competition for the QB spot this summer, pal. Count on it!

The offensive line was the worst unit on the field for us last season. Why was this not a higher priority? Cave and Trevor will have an impact in a couple of years, but linemen usually need 2 years to develop physically and mentally. I hope we didn't go get another great QB, just to be sidelined with an injury.

What about a kicker? Who is going to actually be able to make those clutch field goals for us this year? Why on earth do poor programs have these amazing kickers, when ND can't get a kid to make a 30 yarder consistently?

Does Anthony McDonald remind anybody else of Mike Goolsby? he seems to have a good nose for the ball, let's just hope he plays with the same heart that Gools did.

Kickers... you wanna' talk about Kickers (in my best Jim Mora voice). We've got to score touchdowns and keep opponents from scoring them before we start handing out scholarships to kickers. I'd rather have 7 points than 3, and pitch shutouts instead of winning by a fieldgoal. We'll get to the fine tuning, but it's just not a priority now.

I shake in my boots everytime we attempt a field goal. Where is our stud kicker? We are gonna get burned by that one game. No I don't really where boots.

3:52/Jim Mora: If we don't have a kicker, it's 6 points, not 7. If you recall, PAT's were not a given last year. And don't get me started on the value of kick-offs and punts.

Kickers... I am not talking about field goals (only). Extra points, punts, and kick-offs... we cannot continue to squander points by failing to convert the PAT. Also, the field position we gave up because of our inability to get the ball to the endzone on a kick-off... that is probably the most sore point for me. Inexcusable for what is supposed to be a top level program. Also picking up 3 is better than picking up nothing... failing to put those points on the board really hurt us because we had to go into the "win or lose" mentality so much earlier in the game than we really needed (and hence a lot of the really lopsided scores).

As of today (wednesday) our Irish rank anywhere from 2nd to 7th... depends on the websiter, however, the coaches did a steller job with the recruiting after a terrible season!!

Great post by The Rock. I just love it when most people who support the Irish are ecstatic about the class of 2012, but there are always the few who can never find a positive. Kimberly, I am not referring to you...your post if fine. To bad all of the anon negatives cannot give a name.
An excellent recruiting class by Charlie Weis and his staff!

I don't think Irish fans, most of them anyway, understand the importance of CW's last three classes. He has absolutely destroyed the myth that ND coach cannot recruit the modern young athlete, and we are well on our way back to a national title.

And he's done it with so much class...it's becoming more and more apparent why Urban Meyer chose to coach at UF, where it REALLY, honest to God, doesn't matter what kind of kid is on the field so long as he can play. Anybody who doesn't think believe this, that somehow they would turn a kid down and wouldn't do everything possible to dodge the violations, is smoking serious reefer. For that reason, and due to people like Urban Meyer, the label "student athlete" is being squandered.

This is a great class. Our D should be much improved within 1-2 years. Great offensive skill players, but the 0-line will continue to be a problem - Need more OTs who can pass protect.

Crist is a stud! But, he will not be on campus until later this year. Jimmy didn't show much last year unless he was throwing a screen pass. Protection is what was needed. Brady was so successfull because of his ability to throw a pass with under pressure. It is going to come down to who can do that better. Also with the new defense put in last year speed is needed at the LB position. Side note: I never thought I would be cheering for OSU to nab the #1 QB coming in. Don't want to see Prior throwing/running the ball for Michigan or Penn State.

Dastel said...

We all know Jonas can run and score, but can he catch the ball out of the backfield? Part of Brady's success depended on Walker's ability to catch the screen pass on make something happen. With Floyd's speed and size I would love to see him used like Jeff was a few years ago. We have to be able to be successful with the RB and WR screens considering Clausen not be able to scramble long enough to complete something downfield.

Some thoughts....I think this class is definitely well-rounded. I can see Kapron as a play making OLB at some point in his career. My favorite player has to be Ethan Johnson, he is a beast. In reference to the comment about Brady under pressure, remember his first year---he got a lot of practice under pressure! So, I think Jimmy will shine in this upcoming season, provided the O-line grows, which I think it will. Anyone else excited about Tenuta and his potential for developing the amazing talent that Corwin has shown the ability to bring in? I hope Tenuta will stay for at least 3 years. Go Irish!

I agree there are very few projects, but speaking of projects. Where is Joe Montana's son? I thought he was in this class.

bobby bonefish said...

Anybody who doesn't think a stud Kicker is important doesn't know football.

Ted Eberle said...

I believe Montana's son is classified as an invited walk-on, and I don't think he will have a scholarship this first year. He will be on the Scout Team this year. In the future, watch out.

I know of a talented '09 kicker looking at ND and vice versa.
Is it okay to name names here?
His HS coach mentioned it because he wanted the kid to go somewhere else - HIS alma mater.

Kicker Zach Grossnickle from Denver was just profiled on scoutDOTcom and says he is interested in Notre Dame.
Ray Guy ranks him #7 in the country for class of 09.
